insurance it's just a matter of not paying your monthly premium and your insurance company will cancel you. Of course, when your license plate renewal comes up, you'll need to provide proof to the state that you have insurance, otherwise they won't give you the sticker. But there's still nothing preventing a person from driving with their old expired plates and taking their chances that they won't get caught. As I said before, I don't advocate this at all, as it is illegal, but I know people who have done it from time to time when they've been in a financial pinch. It's a lot less noticable to drive with expired plates then to drive with no plates at all.
